This week, I caught up with the manager of our Paddock Wood Clinic, Ashleigh.

Over some tea and biscuits, I asked her a few questions about her journey into the world of beauty…

When did you first become interested in a career in beauty and why?

When I was younger, I always had my eye on my mum’s box of fancy nail polishes and would never miss an opportunity to practice my designs on her nails when she let me.

When my friends came over, I would sit out on the front porch and paint all of their nails for them.

At school, I took a great interest in art and drama. With this, I was able to extend my artistic creativity. During drama classes, I took on a lot of special effects make-up and loved it. In my teens, I would sit up all night painting my face and creating make-up looks.

When and where did you first start working in beauty?

My career within the beauty industry didn’t start until much later. While I was searching for jobs online, I saw that a company called TipzNToez (now, Hampson Beauty Clinic) were hiring apprentices. I had finally found an opportunity that would allow me to enter the industry I loved! I started 4 years ago, in 2017 and I’ve never looked back.

Since starting at Hampson Beauty Clinic, I have progressed not only in my role but as a person. Nicola, Maria H and Maria B (our Managing Directors) have really helped me to grow as a person and within my career. I was trained in nails by the girls and have travelled to numerous training courses with big brands such as Elemis and HD Brows* (High Definition Beauty). My passion for the industry and clients has only grown stronger.

How did you progress to your current position?

Since starting as an apprentice, I have always shown my dedication and eagerness to succeed. The company have presented me with so many fantastic opportunities to grow and expand my knowledge and skills.

My determination and perseverance have allowed me to progress to clinic manager in a relatively short amount of time. I am so grateful, and I believe my passion for beauty and our clients shines through every day.

What is the most challenging part of your job role?

Before becoming manager, I only had to focus on myself and my work with clients. However, now I am responsible for my entire team. The clinic staff rely on me to guide them in their career and day to day work but also as people, managers in this company care about the staff and we all want them to thrive and enjoy their working life.

As many of our clients have been customers for over 10 years, my team and I seek to maintain this positive relationship with them. Therefore, a challenging aspect of my new role is making sure my team members are happy and confident whilst ensuring that our clients are always receiving a high-quality service. Although this can be difficult at times, I have a great support network around me to provide my staff with the encouragement and training necessary to succeed.

What do you love the most about your job?

I love that I can help clients feel confident and love themselves that little bit more. I also enjoy taking part in learning opportunities that will expand my skillset. Likewise, I love to share my knowledge with others by guiding my staff during training sessions and see them progress in their careers.

What would your top tip be for budding beauticians?

My top tip for anyone in the beauty industry is to stick with it. It can sometimes be difficult when learning some of the new, more advanced treatments but take things one day at a time. The more you practice, the better you will be. Always believe in yourself!
